Pet Birds
Birds are fantastic pets. To those of us who love
them, they are truly incredible and capable of the most amazing
expressions of charm, intelligence, and love. If you have
what it takes to be a bird owner, and you know what you're
getting into, then you're probably in for the pet experience
of a lifetime. Congratulations on making a responsible decision,
whether it's to own a bird or not.
The Talking Pet
How do you teach a bird to talk? Well, you can talk at the
bird, or you can talk to it. Teaching a bird to talk with
a tape or CD is essentially talking at the bird. Say that
you've purchased a baby parrot, and perhaps finished handfeeding
it yourself for a few weeks. Obviously, just leaving it alone
in the cage and playing a recording will be confusing. Some
parrots do pick up some phrases this way; however, your bird
will probably learn better by interacting with you.
Choosing a Bird that fits into your Lifestyle
This is the most important step. Sure, everyone loves a cuddly
cockatoo or a comical macaw, but can we appropriately care
for one of these formidable, yet VERY demanding parrot species?
Most don't have the time nor the financial resources to do
so. Big birds need LOTS of toys, they can cause considerable
damage to furniture and can drive close-living neighbors crazy
with their loud calls. And yet, some people wouldn't do without
them.
Birds are more than a bunch of pretty feathers.
Some smaller birds, like canaries, finches, and parakeets
will be happy to sit in a cage with toys to keep them busy.
The larger birds need larger amounts of attention, and more
of your time. They can live from 20 to 80+ years, so they
should be considered a companion rather than a pet. When you
adopt a parrot, consider it a new family member since it will
live as long as you do.
Bird Tip - Canaries should be kept in clean cages
that are large enough to let the birds fly for exercise.
