Pet Dogs

The decision to get a dog is not something to be taken lightly. An adorable puppy can tug at our heartstrings but, in the end, will require a significant investment of your time and money for a significant number of years. Socializing and training a new puppy is time consuming and, occasionally, frustrating. It can increase the amount of stress on the family, and the dog, working to provide the constant supervision, socialization, and training that is necessary to successfully integrate a dog into a family environment. This is especially true if the primary caregiver(s) are working outside of the home and/or have young children, an elderly parent, or other persons and/or pets to care for. This does not mean that it cannot be done. But, prospective dog owners often underestimate the investment of time, energy, and money, required.

One of the most important decisions you will ever have to make is what breed of puppy bests suits you, your family and your lifestyle. So many people go to a Dog Club and have made a bad choice - the puppy is too active, is difficult to train, eats everything in sight and only responds to food, is aggressive, tries to 'round' the kids up, coarse hair, too big, too small, too hairy, makes me sneeze and wheeze ... ! Choosing a dog to fit into your lifestyle is essential - what suits your best friend, your neighbour, your work colleagues, makes no difference at all when the dog has to live with you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

The animal shelter is a good place to pick up a dog and save it from death in the bargain. Look for a clean, healthy dog, keeping in mind any constraints you may have. Look for signs of friendliness and liveliness. Does it approach you in a friendly manner? Talk with the people caring for the animals for any information on a particular animal they can give you. The best thing to do is to go the animal shelter every weekend and spend time with the dogs. Try to put their plight out of your mind for the moment - it would be nice to save them all, but you can't. Instead, you should get to know the dogs on an individual basis.

Dog Tip - Some household products that are safe for humans, such as medications and onions, can be deadly for your pet.

Dog Tip #2 - While puppies are playful and cute, an adult dog presents fewer unknowns in terms of potential health and behavioral problems.
