Pet Fish

While waiting the few weeks it will take to make sure that your new aquarium is running properly, spend the time looking in pet and aquarium shops for the right fish. Shop around, ask questions, and most importantly, make a couple of visits to each store to see that the fish are healthy. Once you’ve made your choices, read up a little on the species you like to make certain you know their temperature, pH and dietary requirements. Your first fish should be a hardy species with few special food needs. If you are planning a community tank, find out how big each fish will get, whether they swim in schools, and whether they’re aggressive. Then sit down and make a shopping list.

Setting up an aquarium is an exciting hobby, but when you add different fish to a confined space, you can create a beautiful, natural and balanced aquarium or an arena of constant battles and harassed fish that fail to thrive. Setting your goals for what you want in an aquarium will help you avoid some common mistakes and help you select the proper fish.

Choose the fish to fit your tank
Select fish that are compatible with each other and think long-term. That 1 inch fish sure looks cute at a store. But what will you do when it gets 6 inches long and views its cohabitants as potential meals? Fish have specific minimal space requirements that are dependent on their physical size and temperament. Select fish whose needs will be met in your tank. Be sure your tank has adequate hiding places (e.g., rocks, plants, driftwood, etc.) for its inhabitants.

Fish Tip - A tropical fish aquarium should be covered with a flat pane of glass to control the temperature.
