Small Pet Animals
If you want to try a small pet, look at hamsters,
mice, gerbils, guinea pigs and even rabbits. These pets, under
the supervision of an adult, can make good first pets for
children. They require cage cleaning, feeding and are otherwise
fairly maintenance-free. They don't like a lot of handling
like a dog, or even a cat, and hamsters bite frequently. Small
pets, such as the creatures named here, generally live for
two to five years, depending on the species. A wide variety
of small cage-living pets can be adopted at an animal shelter,
purchased at a pet store or acquired from a friend. Look for
a healthy animal, and ask about a replacement guarantee in
case the pet is found to be unhealthy.
The best place to house pets such as hamsters, mice, gerbils,
guinea pigs and rabbits is in a glass aquarium, although
there are metal cages available. Since these small creatures
are masters of escape, their cages must be secure. A cage
cover will help keep the pet in and other curious household
pets out. Wooden cages are not suitable, as these critters
love to chew and can chew their way out and destroy their
home in the process. Wood shavings such as pine make good
bedding material; do not use sawdust, sand or dirt. The cage
should be kept clean and the bedding changed at least weekly
a frequently cleaned, well-ventilated environment is
important to the prevention of respiratory infections.
Choose a pet that has been weaned from its mother and
looks bright and healthy. There should be no discharge from
the eyes, nose or mouth. The teeth should look clean and straight,
not overgrown or broken.
Rabbit Tip - Never pick up a rabbit by its ears. Lifting
it that way can cause pain and injury.
